Students from West Virginia may not know that there are a number of scholarships that could help them fund their studies. Some of these scholarships are only open to students from West Virginia. However, other awards are open to any student who simply attends a college or university in the State of West Virginia. The best way for students to start their search for West Virginia scholarships is to complete a FAFSA form. In addition, students may want to check with the financial aid office at their future college or university to determine whether they are eligible to apply for any institution specific awards. As a final step, students may want to see whether their academic department offers scholarships to students who are majoring in certain fields. West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship is awarded to students from West Virginia based on academic merit. Students are eligible to receive up to $4,750 per year to pay for tuition and fees at an eligible public or independent colleges in WV. In order to be considered for this award, students must complete a FAFSA application prior to March 1st. Students must be residents of WV and must hold at least a 3.0 grade point average in order to apply. The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation provides scholarships to West Virginia residents. Students must submit a completed application prior to the January 15th deadline. While each scholarship has its own unique criteria, the general criteria mandate that students are residents of WV and plan to attend college on a full-time basis. In addition, students must hold at least a 2.5 grade point average and have at least a score of 20 on the ACT exam. Furthermore, they must demonstrate good character. Allegheny Mountain Section of the AIR and Waste Management Association provides scholarships worth $5,000 to undergraduate students. These awards are only open to students who are planning to major in an environmental career. Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate program in WV or western PA on a full-time basis. All applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and applications must be received prior to the March 31st application deadline. Students who are interested in applying for this award must submit their transcripts, an expected plan of study, letters of recommendation, a brief essay, and a resume.
Bridgewater College State Incentive Grant is open to students from certain states, which includes WV. This award is offered to both incoming freshmen and transfer students who are residents of WV, PA, NY, MD, NJ, MD, FL or DE. The award provides $2,500 worth of funding.
