Virginia is home to a number of well known universities such as Virginia Tech and George Mason University. Students with ties to Virginia may be excited to know that there are a number of scholarships that were created to help them afford a higher education. Some of these awards are only for residents from Virginia while others are open to any student who attends a Virginia college or university. The Granville P. Meade Scholarship is awarded to students who show strong promise and financial need. The award is worth $2,000 per year for four years. Applications are due by March 6th. The five top applicants are chosen for the award. Applicants are selected based on academic merit, involvement in extracurricular activities, and their character as described by letters of recommendation. Lee-Jackson Scholarship is awarded to high school students in Virginia. In order to apply, students must be residents of VA who plan to attend a college within the U.S. on a full-time basis. Applications for the award are available at all public and private VA high schools. One award worth $10,000 will be given out and other awards range from $1,000 to $2,000. Students are judged on the quality of their essay, which involves writing about General Lee or General Jackson. Tuition Assistance Grant Program provides awards to residents of VA who are enrolled full-time. Students of varying levels, including undergraduate and graduate students, are eligible to apply. Students must be enrolled in an eligible institution. Religious and theological programs are not approved for this award. The amount of the award varies depending on the number of eligible students. Current rates provide $3,100 to undergraduate students and $1,550 to graduate students. The awards may be renewed provided that the student maintains eligibility. Tuition Grants provide funding for students who were in foster care when they graduated. Any student who enrolls for at least six credits and who is a resident of VA is eligible to apply for this award. Students must also demonstrate financial need in order to be eligible for this award. In order to apply, students must complete the FAFSA form and provide documentation of the dates that they were in foster care. The award covers tuition and fees for a public university in VA. Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program may cover up to full tuition at a VA college or university. Students must be enrolled in an approved program at a VA school.
