Hispanic women seeking to fund their education need not look too far. There are a number of funding agencies and schools who are interested in adding Hispanic women to assist in diversifying the workforce. Below is a list of some scholarships that are geared towards Hispanic women:
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund awards over one hundred and fifty types of scholarships. It also works to increase access to internship and mentoring opportunities for young students. This award is open to students who are at least one quarter Latina. This award is merit based and thus financial need is not considered. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in order to apply for this award. High school seniors are encouraged to apply starting January 1st of their senior year. Students must also intend to enroll full-time at a four year university. They must also complete the FAFSA. All majors are eligible to apply and there is an emphasis on students majoring in STEM fields. The amount of the award varies from $500 to $5,000. The Hispanic Heritage Foundation provides students scholarships to help alleviate the cost of receiving an education. In addition, they work to help assistant Latina students become aware of the need for their leadership within their community and society at large. The Hispanic Women’s Council provides academic scholarships to Hispanic women who are residents of New Mexico. The award is open to continuing undergraduate students as well as graduate students who are enrolled at Central New Mexico Community College or the University of New Mexico. Students must submit a completed application form, a copy of all transcripts, a resume, a personal statement, and two letters of recommendation. The Chicana/Latina Foundation offers awards in the amount of $1,500. The number of awards varies by year, but their website indicates that there are thirty one scholarships that are available this year. The deadline for submission is in March and applicants should look at the website at the beginning of the year for additional information. In order to be eligible for this award, students must be female and Latina, enrolled in an accredited college or university in one of the eligible Northern California counties, have resided in Northern CA for a minimum of two years, and maintain a minimum grade point average (2.5 for undergrads and 3.0 for graduate students). In addition, students must agree to attend the CLF Leadership Institute and volunteer for ten hours with CLF after being selected. Furthermore, Latina women may want to consider inquiring in their school’s financial aid office for any local or state scholarships that are geared towards Hispanic women.
