Finding a passion early in life is important. It can drive your activities, help to network to new friendships, and can provide a great foundational understanding to pursue your collegiate career. While some enjoy hands-on fields that lead to vocational certification or degree attainment, others enjoy studying and researching. English majors tend to fall into this latter category. Regardless of what drove an individual to pursue a degree in English, there are several different schools that provide this coursework toward degree attainment.
One of the most apparent commonalities between all of these institutions, though, is their cost which can get very expensive. For that reason, more and more individuals are turning toward scholarships for English majors that can be used to pursue their degree and future career pursuits. A few of the scholarships for English majors and those who love to write are listed below.

Augustana College Fryxell Scholarship
Augustana College created scholarships for English majors in memory of Dr. Lucy Fryxell’s husband. Dr. Fryxell’s husband had a love of the humanities and the students that studied them. This is because he himself was an English professor at the college. With a love of literature and the written word, he passed this knowledge on to all of his students every time he entered his classroom. Therefore, a one-thousand-dollar scholarship was set up in his name.
Not all students are eligible to apply, however. Only those who are studying some level of the written word can be included in the applicant pool. This, of course, includes English study but also those who are interested in journalism or a similar field in humanities studies. Those who wish to apply must also be enrolled at Augustana College in South Dakota and must be enrolled full-time. ALBA George Watt Memorial Essay Contest
The George Watt Memorial Essay Contest was created for those who love the English language and are able to create thoughts that are understood and engaging through the written word. While not just one of the scholarships for English majors, this scholarship contest is based in an essay format. Those that wish to apply must submit an essay or a portion of their thesis regarding the Spanish Civil War or another historical prompt.
Two different prizes will be awarded for those who are chosen just under three-hundred dollars each. All of the different essays will be given to those who can address all portions of the prompt and who are able to do so through extensive and thorough—as well as verifiable—research. This is an important factor as the review committee will look at the sources used to create the document as much as they will the words used itself. All essays must be between thirty-five-hundred and eight-thousand words and they can be submitted in either Spanish or English, depending on the scholar’s language of choice.
The funds received can be used to pursue a degree in virtually any field but this should be specified on the application. For more information or to apply for this fabulous one of the scholarships for English majors, follow this link.
