What is Nationwide Pet Insurance?
Founded in 1980, Veterinary Pet Insurance has been a reputable provider of reimbursement pet insurance focused on offering a range of coverage options to pet owners. In 2014, VPI rebranded as Nationwide Pet Insurance, but the policies for pet insurance are still underwritten by VPI. Like most pet insurers, Nationwide pet insurance allows policyholders to seek out care for a covered pet at a veterinarian of their choice, and the insurance company reimburses the costs up to the policy limits after the care is complete.
The Benefits of Nationwide Pet Insurance
Nationwide pet insurance offers three main coverage options to pet owners. Under the wellness program, pets are covered up to policy limits for yearly essentials, including vaccinations and wellness exams, shots, flea treatment, and heartworm prevention. With a major medical plan through Nationwide pet insurance, pets are covered for common medical costs.
These may include injuries or illnesses related to accidents, cancer treatments, and hereditary conditions. Pet owners with a major medical policy are not reimbursed for wellness visits each year. Nationwide also offers a whole pet insurance plan which covers up to 90% of vet bills incurred for care related to accidents and illnesses, cancer, specialty and emergency room visits, and wellness exams.
One of the benefits of Nationwide pet insurance is that pet owners have the chance to personalize their coverage from the start by selecting a wellness plan, a major medical plan, or a whole pet plan which covers both. Policyholders also have access to the vet helpline – a 24/7 hotline offered at no cost that provides guidance on general pet concerns and identifying urgent pet care needs. Nationwide pet insurance also provides a variety of resources online, from a comprehensive pet buying guide to detailed articles on common pet conditions.
The Costs and Drawbacks
Nationwide pet insurance is available for dogs, cats, exotic pets, and birds, each with a range of premium costs based on several factors. Currently, dog insurance through Nationwide starts at as little as $18 per month for a wellness plan that covers exams and routine wellness visits. For major medical coverage for a dog, the premium starts as low as $35 per month, while the whole pet plan starts as low as $65 per month. A deductible may need to be met before any reimbursement is paid for any of the three policy options offered through the company.
While Nationwide pet insurance pays up to 90% of veterinary bills under its whole pet insurance plan, there are limitations for both the major medical and pet wellness plans. Nationwide only reimburses veterinary expenses up to the maximum benefit schedule provided to policyholders after a policy is put in place, which limits how much is paid for each condition or service. In addition, Nationwide pet insurance does not cover expenses like taxes, waste removal, grooming, boarding, or any pre-existing conditions.
Pet owners who use Nationwide pet insurance must submit an eligible invoice provided by the vet directly to the insurance company to receive reimbursement for qualified expenses. Once Nationwide has reviewed the invoice, a check is sent for the covered expenses, less any deductible owed by the policyholder. There is also a waiting period before each of the insurance plans offered by the company become effective: 14 days for the whole pet and the major medical plan, and 24 hours for the wellness plan.
Nationwide also reserves the right to increase a policyholder’s premium each anniversary based on the health care history of the covered pet. Although Nationwide pet insurance plans for whole pet and major medical are available in all 50 states, the wellness insurance plan may not be offered in some regions of the country.4.54 Nationwide Pet Insurance
