As pets have taken on increasingly important roles in our lives, spending on their healthcare has gone up dramatically in recent years. As a pet owner myself, I know that the field of veterinary medicine has advanced so pets can now have many of the same procedures humans do, ranging from cancer treatments to open-heart surgeries. Unfortunately, the costs of these treatments can be prohibitively expensive for many families. That’s why buying pet insurance can be a smart move, but it’s important to compare and choose the right plan. Our Allstate pet insurance review can help you determine what Allstate’s policy covers so you can decide whether or not this plan is right for you, or whether another pet insurance company could be better. On this page: What is CoveredWhat isn’t CoveredPolicy CostsHow to Get a PolicyAlternatives to Consider Allstate Pet Insurance Coverage The first thing to know about Allstate pet insurance is that the policy is not actually an Allstate product. It is offered by American Modern Insurance Group, which is a third-party company. That means that while an Allstate agent can help you get covered, you won’t be dealing with Allstate directly if you have to make claims. For this reason, we did not include Allstate in our Editorial Ratings. If you want to see our list of the best companies based on these ratings, check out our guide to the best pet insurance companies. Still, the policy that Allstate markets is a fairly comprehensive pet health policy that promises “nose-to-tail” protection. The insurance policy covers: Vet bills for accidental injuries and emergency careTreatments for illness and disease-related health problemsHospitalization, surgery, and nursing careDiagnostic testing, including tests such as MRIs and X-rays in addition to basic lab workMedicines your pet may require for health issuesCertain alternative therapies, including homeopathic medicine, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and holistic medicine treatmentsTreatment for chronic conditions including hyperthyroidism, allergies, and diabetes Allstate also indicates that genetic conditions will be covered as long as your pet has no symptoms of the condition at the time your policy is purchased. This range of offerings is similar to many other pet insurers. However, you’ll want to talk with your agent and read the policy carefully to find out about any coverage limitations. For example, the policy covers surgery, but there are certain procedures—such as mitral valve repair surgery—that are available only overseas and not in the U.S. What Does Allstate Pet Insurance Not Cover? Although Allstate promises nose-to-tail coverage, routine care—including checkups, dental care, and vaccines—will not be covered by your insurance policy unless you purchase an additional Wellness Rewards plan. Your Allstate pet insurance and pet health policy will also exclude: Any elective procedures that aren’t medically necessary. Examples include declawing that there’s no medical reason for, docking of the tail, or cropping of the earsCosts associated with pregnancy, breeding, or whelpingRoot canals, crowns, and other orthodontic or endodontic proceduresTraining or treatment for behavioral issuesPersonal care or grooming items, such as shampooPet foodSupplements and vitamins Your pet is also not covered for pre-existing conditions or for any genetic or breed-specific conditions your animal shows symptoms for before you get covered. The pre-existing condition exclusion means you should get your pet covered before illness or an accident strikes if you want insurance to pay for care that becomes necessary. Costs of Allstate Pet Insurance Monthly premiums for this particular pet insurance vary based on a variety of factors, including: The type of pet you have. It may cost more to cover an exotic pet as opposed to a pet more commonly owned like a Labrador dog just as an example.Your pet’s breed. Some animals are more predisposed to genetic conditions such as hip dysplasia or various heart conditions. Insuring them may be more costly because of these possible hereditary conditions.Your pet’s age. It will cost more to insure an older pet than a younger oneYour deductible and coverage limits. A higher deductible and lower coverage limits will result in lower premiums than a policy with a low deductible and ample coverageThe type of policy you have. Accident-only policies cost less than policies that cover both accidents and illness Allstate recommends contacting a local Allstate insurance agent to obtain a comprehensive quote for coverage. Online quotes are not available for pet insurance from Allstate. However, several years ago, Consumer Reports indicated accident and illness policies typically run around $473 annually for dogs and $285 for cats, and you can expect to pay slightly higher prices for current coverage. The Allstate customer service team may be able to provide more specific information as well. How to Get Allstate Pet Insurance Allstate pet insurance is available only to pets 14 years of age or younger and may not be available nationwide, depending on where you live. Your pet may also be ineligible for a comprehensive policy covering illness if your animal has been diagnosed with, or shows symptoms of, Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, FeLV, or FIV. If your pet can’t get comprehensive coverage, an accident-only policy may still be an option. You’ll need to contact your Allstate agent to get a quote for coverage and must provide basic information about your pet as part of the application process. There may be a waiting period associated with Allstate pet insurance before your pet insurance plan offers coverage, also.
