While they are not an exciting purchase, buying appliances is a necessary part of life for most American homeowners. Whether you need a new washing machine, stove, refrigerator, furnace, or air conditioning unit, purchasing a major home appliance can be incredibly costly. That is why it is vital to plan ahead financially whenever possible.
While sometimes our appliances stop working at inconvenient times, we typically know when an appliance is likely past its useful life. In those scenarios, we can scout sales and make the best possible decision about which appliance to purchase — and get the best deal in doing so. But when exactly is the best time to buy appliances for your home? Read on to learn some tips about when you should make these major expenditures.
Shop Holiday Sales
Throughout the year, stores offer a variety of sales on appliances that can save you hundreds of dollars. These sales usually take place on Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July, Labor Day weekend, Veterans Day, and of course, Black Friday.
Maytag offers special rebate deals in May, in addition to Memorial Day sales, which can be a bonus to anyone looking for an appliance from that company. Stores tend to offer discounts and rebates over Memorial Day. Over the Fourth of July, stores also offer great deals on appliances, with some prices even dropping below those offered on Black Friday.
Labor Day weekend offers sales on both appliances and various outdoor furniture, while Veterans Day often brings significant deals on appliances and military discounts. However, the best prices on appliances tend to come on Black Friday, but shoppers should be aware that many of these deals are available on a first come, first served basis only.
Look for Older Models After New Releases
Technology changes rapidly, both in the computer and electronics world, and with major appliances. When technology is upgraded, the price on the “old” technology often drops significantly — even if the old version is just a year old. That is why it often makes sense to wait until the latest appliance models are released to purchase a new appliance.
In many cases, new appliance technology is introduced at an annual trade show known as CES in January. However, new appliance models can be released throughout the year. Look for these announcements, and check out local and big box appliance stores for deals on the older models. While you won’t get the latest technology, that could actually be a benefit, as you will not have to worry about the potential flaws in the new systems.
Buying Appliances in the Off-Season
There are certain types of appliances, such as air conditioners, space heaters, and gas grills that have long off-seasons. If you can find them in a store while the demand for these items is low, then you may be able to negotiate a good price on one of these necessary items. By looking for these items when they aren’t as popular, you should be able to get a great deal — and put the item aside until its season has arrived.
Appliance Buying Tips
When it comes to purchasing, the absolute best time to buy appliances is when you don’t have an immediate need. If you wait until your refrigerator breaks, for example, then you won’t have the luxury of shopping for the best deal — you will just want to get something as quickly as possible. If possible, start setting aside money now to pay for your appliance so you can purchase them before an emergency situation occurs.
Take your time when selecting an appliance; reading reviews from a number of sources will be helpful. You should also gather prices from a number of different stores; the prices may vary considerably between stores in your area. You may even be able to request a price match from your preferred store through comparison shopping.
