Life insurance should be a key component of nearly every individual’s life, and is particularly important for those who have young children, a significant amount of debt, or a high-earner in the family.

When a life insurance policy is in place, the life insurance company promises to pay a lump sum amount to beneficiaries when the insured individual passes away.

Coverage may be in the form of term insurance, which lasts for a set period of time, or permanent insurance, which lasts as long as the premiums are paid.

Life insurance policies vary greatly from company to company in terms of total coverage limits, price, and underwriting requirements, making it necessary for those interested in getting a policy to comparison shop.

Gerber Life Insurance is one well-known insurance provider that offers options to those looking for coverage.

Gerber Life Insurance Overview

Gerber Life Insurance, which has been around since 1967, offers a variety of life insurance coverage options to individuals and families.

The company’s mission is to provide life insurance policies for those on a limited budget, as well as those with minor children in their household. Gerber Life insurance offers both whole life and term life insurance options for consumers throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

To date, the company has more than 3.3 million policies in place, providing more than $45 billion in total coverage.

Cost

The cost of a Gerber Life coverage depends on the type of policy selected, the age of the insured, the length of the term (if applicable), the amount of insurance needed, and the health status of the individual applying for coverage.

For Gerber Life’s adult term policy, a 30-year-old female who is a non-smoker may qualify for a policy of $150,000 in coverage for $25.63 per month. A male opting for the same coverage and in relatively good health would pay $32.25 per month.

In addition to term insurance, individuals may also select a guaranteed whole life insurance policy with the company. A woman aged 50 could get $12,000 of permanent coverage for $41.18 per month. A man of the same age would pay $52.73 for the same coverage.

The costs for both term and whole life insurance through Gerber are higher than comparable insurance providers.

Coverage & Most Popular Policy

Although Gerber Life Insurance offers adult term and guaranteed whole life coverage, the company’s most popular policy is its Grow-Up Plan, which is designed to cover minor children.

Parents with children up to the age of 17 may get a policy of up to $50,000 in whole life insurance without medical underwriting. The cost of a five-year-old girl or boy is $18.51 per month for a $25,000 policy. The benefit of this type of policy is that cash value accrues within the policy over time. This cash value can be used for college funding or other financial needs in the future. Additionally, this type of coverage locks in a child’s insurability for the remainder of their life, so long as the policy remains in force.

The Gerber Life guaranteed life insurance policy is available to those age 50 to 80, with coverage between $5,000 and $25,000. There is no medical exam or health history required as part of the application process, which is rare for many companies that offer life insurance for seniors.

For adult term insurance, individuals may get coverage between $100,000 and $300,000 for a term of ten, 20, or 30 years. A medical exam is required for those over the age of 51.

Requirements to Get Insured

Gerber Life does not require medical underwriting for its guaranteed whole life insurance or its Grow-Up Plan for minor children. There is, however, a brief application required that includes information about the individual’s current age, resident state, and income if applicable.

For the adult term life option, individuals do not need to submit to medical underwriting unless they are between the ages of 51 and 70. However, individuals are required to submit an application that captures that same personal information about the insured’s resident state, date of birth, and financial picture.

Because several insurance policy options do not require medical underwriting, approval for a Gerber Life Insurance plan is typically a quick process.

Availability

Gerber Life Insurance is available throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico for all three of its major policy options. While coverage is available in all regions, individuals may only qualify for certain life insurance options if they meet the age and medical requirements for approval.

Customer Service

Gerber Life has an A rating with A.M. Best, as well as an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, although it is not accredited by the BBB.

Gerber Life offers several ways to get in contact as a customer, including directly e-mailing the insurance support team at any time. Customers may also call the toll-free number for the company between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. (EST) Monday through Friday, and between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (EST) on Saturday. These customer service hours are more expansive than most insurance companies who only operate during the week.

Bottom Line

Gerber Life is a well-known life insurance provider focused mainly in the whole life insurance product landscape for children. However, individuals may also get coverage as an adult, either as a guaranteed whole life policy or a term policy. The company has longer customer service hours than other insurers, as well as relatively high ratings, but the cost of its guaranteed whole life and term coverage options are higher than most insurance companies offering similar products. Individuals may, however, have an easier time getting coverage because medical exams are not needed in most cases.
