See how Progressive Insurance stacks up against top-rated RV insurance

Recreational vehicle sales have boomed in recent years, with U.S. ownership surpassing 10 million. Owning an RV opens up a world of travel, but it also comes with responsibilities, including maintaining an RV insurance policy.

Fortunately, many popular insurance carriers offer RV insurance policies, and Progressive is one of them. In this Progressive RV insurance review, we break down the pros, cons, eligibility requirements, quote process, and alternatives to carrying Progressive RV insurance.

Progressive’s standard RV insurance policy starts at $125 per year and includes comprehensive and collision coverage, liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and medical payment coverage. It covers many RV types that you drive or tow, plus full-time RV insurance.

The size of your RV, the frequency of use, and your driving record will factor into your overall insurance premium. Fortunately, Progressive offers several discounts that could offset some of those costs.

Progressive’s online quote system lets you customize and tailor optional coverage to fit an RV owner’s needs. Just remember that along with paying extra for some customizations, you’ll also be on the hook for a deductible if loss or damage occurs.

Here’s a quick overview of Progressive’s add-on RV coverage:

  • Roadside assistance: Offers towing for your motorhome if it breaks down on the highway. Includes fuel delivery, mechanical breakdowns, flat tires, and dead battery replacements.
  • Total loss or personal effects replacement: You can cover the total loss of your camper if you get into an accident, or only cover the personal belongings inside of it.
  • Vacation liability coverage: This covers bodily injury of someone—either up to $10,000 or $500,000—in or around your RV while you’re on vacation.
  • Full-timer’s liability insurance: Similar to vacation liability, but for those who use their RV as a permanent residence.
  • Loss assessment: If you’re part of an RV association, this covers fees or charges up to $5,000.
  • Emergency expense: Includes up to $750 for transportation and hotel costs while you’re on vacation if your RV is disabled more than 50 miles from your house.
  • Pet injury coverage: Covers up to $1,000 in vet bills, without a deductible, if your pet is injured in an accident while riding in the RV.

In some cases, the benefit of adding some of these to your insurance premium might end up costing more than they are worth in the long run, so consider that when making your policy selections.

Pros and cons of Progressive RV Insurance

There are some perks and drawbacks to getting Progressive RV insurance. Here are a few to consider.

Pros

  • Progressive has policies for a broad range of recreational vehicles, including class A, B, and C motorhomes, travel trailers, campers, fifth-wheels, horse trailers, and pop-ups.
  • It provides several discounts—including multi-policy, for example, if you already have car insurance or renters or homeowners insurance with Progressive—that helps keep its rates competitive.
  • Includes small accident forgiveness, which means your insurance rates won’t increase if you file an insurance claim under $500.
  • If you opt in to the free disappearing deductible feature, Progressive will knock 25% off your deductible for every claim-free policy period.
  • You can get a quote online in less than 10 minutes.

Cons

  • Progressive motorhome insurance does not include personal injury protection or roadside assistance in its core policy, like many of its competitors do.
  • Negative reviews online warn about poor customer service, claim denial, and annual premium increases without ever filing a claim.
  • Progressive Corporation has a one-star customer rating on the Better Business Bureau.
  • Insurance rates and eligible discounts vary by state and ZIP code, which means where you store your RV may be more expensive than the state you actually vacation in.
  • How you buy your policy—online, by phone, or in-person—can affect your insurance costs.

Who’s eligible to get Progressive RV Insurance coverage?

Most consumers are eligible for Progressive motorhome insurance, although premiums fluctuate based on your driving record, the state you live in, and age.

To obtain coverage, you must have a valid driver’s license, Social Security number, and be at least 18 years old.

How to apply for a Progressive RV Insurance quote

Armed with just the basic information about your RV, you can get a quote online within 10 minutes. You can also call, or be called by an insurance agent for a quote, or visit a local independent agent if you prefer.

To receive a quote, you’ll need to provide the following information:

  • Details about what type of RV you own or lease, including the make, model, year, length, location, purpose, market value, and any features like anti-lock braking system, anti-theft, or airbags.
  • Your personal information including name, address, email, gender, marital status, Social Security number, and primary residence (and majority location of the RV).
  • Specifics about your driving record, insurance coverage, and validity of your driver’s license. This includes disclosing any violations, accidents, or claims within the past three years. You can also add an additional driver to the quote.

After gathering this information, you’ll receive a 12-month quote that can be paid in full for a discount, or you can choose the monthly installment option. You can review your coverage and make adjustments to receive an updated quote on the spot.

If you’re happy with the quote, you can complete the registration process, pay, and be covered as soon as tomorrow. It has an online chat representative available if you have questions, or you can call their 24/7 customer service department for help.
