Do you love shopping at Walmart? Now Walmart gives us another reason to love them! The Walmart Foundation provides scholarships to current Walmart employees and their dependent children provided that they are a high school senior. The two scholarships offered are the Walmart Associate Scholarship and the Walmart Dependent Scholarship. Walmart does not directly provide scholarships to the public, but they support organizations that do (i.e., Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Thurgood Marshall, etc.).
Walmart Associate Scholarship is open to any Walmart employee who has been with the company for at least six months and who is a U.S. citizen. In addition, the applicant must have graduated high school or achieved a GED prior to applying for the scholarship. The applicant must have the intention of beginning college courses within the next six months and have demonstrated financial need. Students are required to provide proof of financial need, such as a tax return. The application cycle opens at four different times throughout the year (November 1st to December 2nd, February 1st to March 3rd, May 1st to June 2nd, and August 1st to September 3rd). Selected recipients will be notified about five weeks after the application close date. Students will need to complete a quiz online to ensure that they are eligible and the application will only become available to them if they are indeed eligible to apply for the award. The amount of the award depends on the type of institution that the student plans to attend as well as the number of credits that they plan to take. The current range of this scholarship varies from $500 to $1,500. The money can be used for both an undergraduate or graduate certificate program, and Associate’s Degree, a Bachelor’s degree and/or a Graduate degree. The scholarship must be renewed at least twice during the academic year. Students are eligible to renew their award every year for six-years or until graduation. The award caps out at $16,000 over a six year period. More information can be found at: http://giving.walmart.com/associate-scholarships
The Walmart Dependent Scholarship helps defray the cost of education for dependents of Walmart employees. The employee must have worked at Walmart for at least six consecutive months. The student must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and demonstrate financial need. Students may apply between January 5 through April 1. Students must also have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and plan on enrolling full-time at a college or university. This award provides $1,625 up to two times per year. This award is renewable for up to three years but the total amount of money received may not exceed $13,000. In order to apply, students must submit an application online with all supporting materials (transcripts, financial aid report, and a tax return from the parent).
