Many colleges and universities are building bigger, better, and modern gyms. These million dollar buildings offer students everything from weight rooms, spin classes, rock climbing towers, swimming pools e.t.c. Below is a list of the top universities with the best gym facilities.
- University of Missouri
Missouri university gym facilities are just impressive. Remodelled in 2005, the fitness facilities comprise of 5 courts of racquetball and squash, 35ft rock climbing tower, over 14,000lbs of free weights, as well as 100 pieces of cardio equipment. The aquatic centre has an amazing pool, mostly used for swimming competition.
- Ohio State University
The university’s recreation centre is large enough to accommodate everyone. The main gym is over 500, 000 square feet and has a leisure pool, six-lane pool, spa, saunas, hot tubs, cardio equipment e.t.c. Other fitness facilities comprise of a 4-lane track, 10 racquetball courts, as well as yoga classes.
- University of Cincinnati
The University of Cincinnati’s recreation facility is just amazing. The 200,000 square feet gym has about 21,000 lbs of weights. - Northwestern University

The gyms comprise of the weight room; which is fully equipped with weight machines, the gymnastics practice facilities, 14 racquetball courts, as well as 10 squash courts. Other facilities include a tennis center, indoor and outdoor natatoriums, and offer various fitness classes. The university’s recreation center is one of the largest in the world.
- Illinois State University
The fitness center was completed in 2010 and boasts of a generous amount of space per student. It has won awards from University Magazine, American School, Recreation Management magazine, and Athletic Business magazine. It has some of the best cardio equipment, swimming pools, rock climbing towers, racquetball courts and other outdoor activities facilities such as tennis courts, basketball pitch and football fields.
- California State University
The 120,000 square feet fitness center might not be as large as the rest but definitely identified for its design aesthetics. It comprises of two outdoor pools and a 40-foot rock climbing tower. There are various types of cardio equipment as well as fitness classes. It has worn several awards for its outstanding recreation facility.
- Colorado State University
The LEED GOLD rated facility consists of two 38-foot-tall rock climbing tower, a fully equipped gymnasium, an aquatics center, multipurpose activity court, special needs spaces, martial arts space, a lazy river, an on-deck sauna and steam room, as well as a shallow area for basketball and volleyball.
- Virginia Commonwealth University
