American Express is one of the major credit card companies that offer credit solutions for people across the globe. They have been in business since the 1850’s, and have been providing financial services for over a century and a half. If you have heard to shy away from Amex, you may be behind the times.
American Express has done a lot of changes in the past few years, making them an ideal choice for those that want the benefits of a charge card. Let’s take a look at one of the best airline credit cards, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card.
Benefits and Rewards
With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card you can earn airline miles towards your air travel. Whether you use the card to buy everyday things like groceries and gas, or you use it to pay your bills, you can earn miles for all purchases. There is never a limit placed on how many air miles you can earn. By spending more than $25,000 on your card, you can even take advantage of Miles Boost and get an extra 10,000 miles. Basically, the more you spend, the more you earn.
When you first open your card, make sure that you take advantage of the bonuses that they have to offer. For a limited time, if you use the card to make $3,000 or more in purchases in your first three months, you will receive an additional 70,000 bonus miles along with 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles. You will even get a $100 statement credit for making a Delta purchase with your card within the first three months.
Don’t want to travel alone? Take a friend with you when you cash in your annual companion certificate. When you renew your card every year, you will get a new certificate. This will allow you to pair up and travel once each year.
If you enjoy travel, take advantage of the other travel benefits that come with this card as well. You will receive in-flight savings, car rental loss and damage insurance, baggage insurance and access to their Global Assistance Hotline. Other benefits include extended warranty options, easy return guarantees, cell phone insurance and access to shopping and entertainment discounts.

Just being able to earn sky miles doesn’t make this a great card. You also have to take a look into the rates and fees to make sure that the benefits outweigh the costs associated with being a cardholder. First, let’s look at the Annual Percentage Rate. The APR of this card will range from 15.99% to 24.99%. Your rate will be based on your credit history and other personal factors. The APR will have the same range for any balance transfers made within 30 days of opening your card. Cash advance APR is a bit higher, at 25.49% currently.
One of the drawbacks of the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card is that they charge a $195 annual membership fee. The annual fee is actually quite common in cards that offer airline miles. Along with this fee, you will also be subject to a $5 or 3% fee when you make a balance transfer or cash advance. The good news is that even though there are certain fees with the card, you won’t pay any foreign transaction fees. This is really good because most consumers that opt for this type of card tend to do their fair share of traveling.
Making your payment on time each month is very important, especially if you want to avoid penalty fees and a penalty APR. Penalty fees for late payments or returned payments can be up to $37. You may also risk a higher interest rate of 29.49% as a penalty rate if you make a late or returned payment. This penalty APR will apply to your account for at least six months, maybe longer depending on your ability to make timely payments.
If you have been looking for a card that offers sky miles for air travel, then the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card may be a great choice for you. Earn miles towards flights so that you can travel in style, without the hassle. While there is an annual fee with this card, if you use the card often to pay for your air fare it will more than pay for itself. With that being said, if sky miles aren’t something that you would benefit from, you may want to look into other cards that don’t charge hefty annual membership fees.
