Maine is well known as home to fantastic seafood, beautiful lighthouses, and lovely water views. Students who have ties to Maine now have another reason to love their state. Many scholarships exist for students who are either residents of Maine or for students who attend a college or university within the state of Maine. In order to get started with your scholarship search, students should first complete a FAFSA to determine whether they are eligible for any funding from the federal or state government. In addition to this step, the scholarships below were created specifically for students with Maine ties:
Tuition Break for New England Residents is open to residents of Maine who plan to study at another college of university within New England. Students must plan to study in one of the following states: CT, MA, NH, RI, or VT. The award provides a discount of up to $7,000 per year. Students are required to major in an area that is not offered at a Maine university or college. Competitive Skills Scholarship Program offers Maine residents the opportunity to receive funding for high-wage jobs that are critical to the state. The award can be used to attend two- or four-year programs as well as certificate programs.
Maine Legislative Memorial Scholarships provide sixteen lucky students the opportunity to receive $1,000 to put towards their tuition. These awards are open to both high school seniors and current college students who attend an institution in Maine. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for this award. Recipients are chosen based on academic merit, community service, involvement in extracurricular activities, financial need, an essay, and recommendation letters. Richard H. Pierce Memorial Scholarship provides two awards worth $2,500 each year. In order to be eligible, students must be residents of Maine and have been accepted or currently attend an accredited institution. Winners are chosen based on academic merit, community contributions, work history, financial need, and an essay. The Russ Casey/Maine restaurant Associates Scholarship Fund provides three awards worth $1,000 each. This award is only open to residents of Maine who plan to major in a career that is related to restaurant, hotel management, culinary arts, or a related field. Winners are chosen based on the following criteria: career goals, prior work history, academic merit, and financial need. Completed applications must be submitted prior to the April 17th deadline. In addition to these awards, students may want to consider asking at the financial aid office at their future college or university as many institutions have additional awards available to Maine residents.
