Louisiana Student Loan Forgiveness Programs

Louisiana is known for its fighting spirit, its Mardi Gras celebrations, and a vibrant and interesting mixture of varying cultures. It is also home to many different Louisiana student loan forgiveness programs as well. The following outlines these programs of which you may be eligible to partake in.

State Loan Program

For those in the state of Louisiana, there is a Louisiana State Loan Repayment Program to help with repayment of educational debt. This program offers up to thirty-thousand dollars annually for a period of thirty-six months and is for professionals that are working in rural or metropolitan areas that are highly underserved. Individuals who are eligible must be physicians who provide primary care.

Other requirements include:

  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must have an unrestricted license in good standing to practice medicine in the state of Louisiana
  • Must not have faced criminal conviction of a felony act
  • Must have no other service obligations that would conflict with this program
  • Must have verifiable student debt
  • Must meet all other requirements found here

Law Loan Programs


Those that are public defenders at the state or federal level or those that work for the state prosecutor and live in Louisiana may be eligible for loan repayment monies.

The John R. Justice Student Loan Repayment Program must meet all requirements found here, and include:

  • Being a US citizen
  • Having loans that are at or exceed twenty-thousand dollars
  • Must be an attorney
  • Must have all licenses and certifications to practice law
  • Must be employed in the state of Louisiana or meet all other residency and employment requirements as explained in the link above

Bar Foundation Loan Assistance Program

Law school can be very expensive and result in much student debt. Those that work and live in Louisiana may be eligible for some debt relief of up to five-thousand dollars annually. The Louisiana Bar Foundation offers some assistance as a way to help recruit and retain employees in the legal field. Specifically in the field of legal aid or other public service sectors and providing services to other underserved or vulnerable members of the community.

Those that wish to apply need to meet all residency requirements, all licensing and certification requirements, and prove that they have educational debt in their name. The details can be found here.
