Making the decision to attend Law school can be both rewarding and scary.
Often students worry about the large course load and the financial cost of attending law programs.
While there are law school loans available, what law students may not realize is that there are various scholarship opportunities for them. Below is a short list of the many opportunities available for students who seek a career in justice:
Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship is awarded through the Bar Association of San Francisco. The total amount of the award is $10,000. The application deadline is May 11th.
George A. Straight Minority Scholarships are available to students who have law library experience and who belong to one of the minority groups. Students must be degree candidates at an accredited institution and must plan to take a job in law librarianship. Miller Johnson West Michigan Diversity School Scholarship is open to students who are permanent Michigan residents. Students may attend law school anywhere within the United States. Students must be members of a minority group and demonstrate financial need. Additionally, applications must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and be a United States citizen in order to apply. The Law Student Assistance Fund provides $3,000 for one or more students from Shelby County Ohio. Students must be in their last year of law school in order to be eligible. In addition, students must have shown leadership ability through involvement in school, church, or their community. Financial need and strong legal scholarship are also considered in making funding decisions. The award money may be used to cover tuition, textbooks, or other educational expenses. Maryland Graduate and Professional School Scholarship provides funding to law students. Awards for $1,000 are offered to students in law schools and other professional programs. Students are required to complete the FAFSA in order to be considered for the grant. In addition, students must be Maryland residents with documented financial need. Law students who are members of a minority group may be especially interested in knowing that there are various scholarships available for minority law students. The Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund provides $15,000 to twenty law students from minority backgrounds. The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) funds law students who agree to support and further the organization’s mission of improving civil rights within the Latino community via legal work. Typically, at least five scholarships are offered each year. The scholarships are for $5,000 and more information can be found on MALDEF’s website: http://www.maldef.org/leadership/scholarships/.
