Recently, Chase released the new IHG Rewards Club Premier credit card to replace the previous IHG Rewards Club Select credit card. The original card was considered one of the best hotel credit cards offering excellent perks for people who love to stay at IHG hotels.
The new IHG Rewards Club Premier credit card has some new benefits, including a free fourth night on award stays and better bonus categories. Yet it took away one of the biggest advantages of the IHG Select card: an anniversary free night at any IHG hotel in the world, including pricey properties that usually cost over $600 a night. With this new card, this free night is limited to properties that cost 40,000 points or less a night.
Still, the IHG Rewards Club Premier credit card has a lot of notable perks and is worth a look for anyone interested in earning free hotel stays as they use their card.
Applying for the IHG Rewards Club Credit Card
Like most travel credit cards, the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card requires an excellent to good credit score. Applicants can apply online, providing basic information such as name, address, and social security number.
IHG Credit Card Rates, Fees, and Limits
The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is a typical rewards credit card. It has an annual fee of $89, and an annual percentage rate (APR) for purchases of between 17.49% and 24.49%. Spending limits for this card are based on the creditworthiness of the applicant.
100,000 Bonus Points and Other Benefits
There are numerous perks associated with the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card. These include 100,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 on purchases within three months of opening an account. In addition, account holders can earn 5,000 bonus points after adding an authorized user.
Beyond bonus points, cardholders earn a free night each year on their account anniversary at eligible IHG hotels around the world. For any stay of four nights or more, cardholders get a free reward night.
Earning points is easy with the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card. Cardholders are given 10 points for every dollar spent when staying at an IHG hotel. They also earn two points for every dollar spent at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants. All other purchases earn one point per dollar.
Other benefits include platinum elite status as long as you have the card, and a global entry or TSA pre-check fee credit of up to $100 every four years if you charge the application fee to your card.
Downsides to Consider
The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is not a great card to use for purchases outside of IHG hotels. At one point for every dollar spent — or two points for purchases at limited locations — its bonus system is structured so that you only really see a benefit if you are spending money at IHG hotels.
The annual fee is $89, which is relatively low for hotel rewards cards — but higher than the original card’s $49 fee. If you stay frequently at IHG properties, then this card’s rewards will easily pay for itself.
Bottom Line
The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is a great card for people who stay frequently at IHG properties, and who are interested in earning free hotel stays. However, it isn’t a great everyday credit card, as it doesn’t allow you to earn many points outside of purchases at IHG properties. Its points also cannot be redeemed for anything other than hotel stays.
Compared to the IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card, the Premier Card is more expensive and may have some less impressive benefits. Specifically, while its bonus points for stays at IHG properties are higher (10 points per dollar instead of five), it limits properties for the free anniversary night. But with a bonus night for stays of four nights, it may be a better overall card for many users.
