The Amazon Shop with Points program lets shoppers use rewards points to make purchases on Amazon.com. Shoppers can use points they earn from their Amazon-branded credit cards, but they can also use points earned from a variety of other rewards programs.

They can apply points to all or part of their payment when making an Amazon purchase. Here’s how to use the Amazon Shop with Points program.

How Does Amazon Shop With Points Work?

First, not all Amazon purchases are eligible for Shop with Points payment. Shoppers should check to make sure the purchase is eligible for payment with points before making their purchase.

Among the categories you can’t use points with: Amazon Kindle downloads, digital music, Amazon videos, Amazon Appstore apps, AmazonFresh items, Subscribe and Save items, Prime memberships, pre-order items, textbook rentals, Amazon Allowance, and gift card reloads. Beyond that, you should be able to apply points toward most other types of Amazon purchases.

Members of several different rewards programs have the ability to use rewards points to shop at Amazon. In some cases, registration is automatic. For example, anyone with an Amazon-branded card is automatically registered to use rewards points for payment.

Cardholders who have used an eligible credit card to make a previous Amazon purchase are automatically registered to use rewards points for Amazon payments as well. Shoppers who want to use points from other rewards programs, however, may need to go through the registration process before they can make a purchase.

When the shopper begins the checkout process, the registered accounts with points available are visible. Shoppers can see all available points automatically. There is not a minimum number of points shoppers can use toward purchases, and there are no fees associated with the redemption of points.

Every Amazon rewards point translates into $1 that can be applied toward an Amazon purchase. Shoppers then choose how many, if any, available points they want to apply to their purchase. If there is a remaining balance due after points have been applied, the shopper can then choose a payment method to cover the balance of the purchase.

Amazon Store Card

  • Annual Fee: $0
  • APR: 27.24% variable APR
  • Benefits: Qualify for 5% cash back on Amazon for Prime members and special financing options
  • Category: Store Credit Card

The Amazon store card is a branded card that can only be used for purchases made through Amazon.com. Cardholders who use the Amazon store card to pay for a purchase on Amazon.com earn 1 reward point for each dollar spent.

The standard Amazon store card, however, is not eligible to earn rewards that may be used for the Shop with Points program.

Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card

  • Annual Fee: $0
  • APR: 15.49%23.49% variable APR
  • Benefits: Earn 3% cash back on Amazon, 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores, and 1% cash back everywhere else
  • Category: Rewards Credit Card

Cardholders earn 1 point for every cent in purchases on their Amazon Rewards Visa Signature card. This applies to all purchases and not just those made on Amazon.com.

Rewards points, however, can only be used for Amazon purchases. Since there isn’t flexibility or choice in how cardholders can use their rewards, this can be a drawback to choosing this particular rewards credit card.

American Express Membership Rewards

Only American Express cardholders who have specific cards that allow them to earn rewards points are eligible to use Amazon’s Shop with Points program. In general, cardholders earn 1 reward point for each dollar of purchase on a qualifying American Express card.

Amazon is the largest online retailer that accepts American Express rewards points.

Hilton Honors

Unlike some of the other rewards points programs that let you Shop with Points at Amazon, members can only earn Hilton Honors rewards points from qualifying stays at Hilton brand hotels. Members must apply a minimum of five Hilton Honors points towards their Amazon purchase.

The conversion of Hilton Honors rewards points into dollars at Amazon is not particularly favorable when compared to the value members can receive by redeeming Hilton Honors points for hotel stays. Each Hilton Honors point converts to 2 cents toward an Amazon Shop with Points purchase. So, members might prefer to save those Hilton Honors points for travel.

Chase Ultimate Rewards

In order to use Chase rewards for an Amazon Shop with Points purchase, the cardholder must have a Chase credit card that is eligible for Ultimate Rewards.

There isn’t a minimum amount of points that cardholders must apply to a purchase, and there isn’t a fee associated with using points. Every $1 on Amazon purchases requires 125 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Citi ThankYou

Citi ThankYou points are only available to members who have one of Citi’s ThankYou line of credit cards. There is no minimum amount of points required to use rewards points on an Amazon purchase.

The conversion of rewards points into dollars at Amazon is one of the higher conversion factors for making purchases with points.

Discover

Discover cards don’t give rewards points but instead give cash-back bonus dollars. These cash-back rewards can be applied to purchases with Amazon’s Shop with Points program.

Each $1 cash-back bonus converts directly to $1 in purchases at Amazon, and cardholders don’t have a minimum amount that they can apply to purchases at Amazon. It’s easier than requesting a statement credit for a purchase, and cardholders get the full value of cash-back rewards on their purchase.
