How to Check the Application Status for a Discover Credit Card

Updated Jun 14, 2023   |   3-min read

When you apply for a Discover credit card, you may receive an automatic approval, but not always. However, if you don’t receive an automatic approval, that doesn’t mean you’re denied. You can take several steps to check your Discover credit card application status, which may end up in approval. Here’s how to find out where you stand.

Applying for a Discover Credit Card

You can apply for a credit card by filling out an application online. Usually, your personal information and perhaps some information about your income and expenses are included. After that, the process has several more steps before the lender accepts or declines you.

Whether you’re applying for a Discover card or another type of card, the issuer will usually give you a response immediately, but not necessarily a final decision. You may receive instant approval. If you don’t, you may receive a response letting you know that your application will undergo further review.

Once that occurs, and your identity has been verified, the issuing company will look at your credit history. They will look at your payment history, your debt, and whether you’ve recently applied for new credit with any other companies.

If you are approved, even if you don’t hear back immediately, you’ll receive your new Discover card in the mail. If you’re denied, you’ll receive a letter in the mail from Discover letting you know why your application was denied.

Sometimes you may not want to wait to receive that information in the mail. You may want to plan for whether you will have access to that credit or not. So, in the meantime, you can check the status of your credit card application.

How to Check a Discover Card Application Status

The following are some simple steps you can take to check the status of your Discover card application.

Checking Your Status Online

The best way to check your application status is to go to the card application site, where you enter your social security number and zip code. That will immediately provide your Discover card application status.

Checking Your Status by Phone

If you prefer to check your status by phone, you can call Discover’s customer service phone number at (800) 347-2683. The line is available at all times, and a real person should take your call.

For an automated version, there are menu options when you call the number. You should push # on the first menu list provided, and four on the second list, although make sure you listen to the prompts because those options can change.

Then, you will be asked to enter your Social Security number. Once you do that, you can listen to your application status.

If you find out that your application has been denied, you will be able to find out the reason. You can also ask that Discover reconsider your application if you’ve been denied. However, you will have to indicate to Discover why you feel you should have been approved. That can be done by calling the Discover customer service phone number as well.

Summary

If you get antsy waiting on the status of a Discover card application, there are ways you can check on your application. Going online to the Discover website is probably the easiest way to check your status since you can do it anytime with just your SSN and ZIP code. If you don’t want to do it online, you can also contact customer service, and they’ll give you a status update as well.
