Burger lovers know that Burger King’s Whopper is a huge in size and taste. Yet few people realize that for ten years Burger King’s McLamore Foundation has Whopper scholarships. Seriously, the scholarship is called the James W. McLamore WHOPPER Scholarship and it provides a huge benefit to three well-deserving students each year.
The Whopper scholarship provides $50,000 to three students year each. In order to apply, students must live in either Canada or the United States. Furthermore, they must be a recent high school graduate (within the past three years) or currently enrolled in their last year of high school. All applicants must have plans to attend a four-year institution of higher learning and hold a minimum of a 3.3 GPA. The Whopper scholarship criteria also state that applicants must scored well on college entrance exams (a minimum of 25 on the ACT or a score of at least 1700 on the SAT).
While the Whopper scholarships provide a large amount of funding, the Burger King McLamore Foundation also offers smaller grants (usually around $1,000). The criteria for the smaller grants are less strict and include: living in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or Canada; having a minimum of a 2.5 GPA, and having the intention of attending either an accredited college full-time. The exact number of grants varies by year, depending on the availability of funds. The website suggests that students apply early for scholarships as only the first 50,000 applications are able to undergo the review process. The deadline for the scholarship is December 15th for the following academic year.

These Burger King scholarships appeal to a wide array of students as there are no restrictions on the types of programs of studies or degrees that will be funded. In fact, they can also be used for training in a vocational or technical school program. Burger King Scholarship applicants are selected based on several criteria, including their academic performance as evidenced by their GPA, their previous work history, and extracurricular activities such as sports, school involvement, and community engagement. These scholarships are awarded annually in the spring and the application cycle remains open from October 15-Decebmer 15. These awards are typically not able to be renewed. However, the scholarship may be used for a number of expenses, including tuition, books, and student fees.
Burger King permits employees interested in continuing education to apply for these grants. For employees only, non-degree coursework will be funded. This may include learning a new language or taking a computer course. For both employees and high school students, it appears that students who have the best chance of being awarded a scholarship through the Burger King program have a strong track record of service to their community, extracurricular involvement, and/or school involvement in addition to academic excellence. If you want to quench your thirst for knowledge and receive some free money, remember to start the application process as soon as possible for the best chance at a whopper of a scholarship!
