When you think of the state of New Jersey, you think of a state with immense pride.
Residents of New Jersey never fail to mention that their state is home to the NFL’s Giants and Jets, music icons Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen, and the famous stretch of beaches known as the Jersey Shore.
New Jerseyans also love to boast of their cuisine culture. The Garden State is known for fresh vegetables, 24-hour diners on every corner, Taylor Ham pork roll, and Italian specialities (especially pizza).
However, when considering all of the state’s rich food history, New Jersey may be best known for their bagels.
Never ever, ever, ever get into an argument with a New Jerseyan about what state has the best bagels, even if you are from New York. And, if you happen to be from New Jersey yourself, do not dare get into a debate with a fellow New Jersey resident about whose town has the better bagel.
For whatever reason, people from New Jersey love to proclaim their home state has the best bagels. Some cite the water supply, others point to the state’s deeply rooted tradition of bread making, and many just like to think Jersey bagels are made with a little extra TLC. In honor of New Jersey’s bagel heritage, LendEDU has created the Bagel Density Index to rank the best towns in New Jersey for bagel lovers.
LendEDU’s Best New Jersey Towns for Bagel Lovers list ranks the best 230 towns in the state for bagel enthusiasts. Our list looked at hundreds of towns across the Garden State with a population of over 5,000 people. The Bagel Density Index was calculated by dividing the amount of bagel shops in a town by that town’s population. Places with a higher Bagel Density Index were ranked higher, as they had the most bagel shops per person. Only businesses that were solely focused on making bagels were considered; for example, sandwich delis or convenience stores that had bagels were not considered. Towns that made LendEDU’s list will provide visitors with the most bagel options, and the smallest lines!
Without further adieu, LendEDU settles the great Jersey debate with the Best New Jersey Towns for Bagel Lovers list.

Complete Rankings for the Best New Jersey Towns for Bagel Lovers
To compile the list of the Best New Jersey Towns for Bagel Lovers, LendEDU evaluated hundreds of towns across the state of New Jersey. To be considered for the list, a town had to have a population of over 5,000 according to the most recent census information. LendEDU’s data is licensed by Onboard Informatics, a data company. LendEDU was able to find the amount of bagel stores in each town in New Jersey. To be counted, the establishment needed to be solely a bagel shop, not a sandwich deli or convenience store that also sells bagels. After we found the number of bagel stores in each town, that number was divided by the total population of that town.
The resulting number was multiplied by 10,000 to give a score on a more friendly scale. This final number was our Bagel Density Index, which was the number of bagel stores per person in each town. A higher Bagel Density Index meant a higher ranking on LendEDU’s list. LendEDU’s list does not rank the best bagel places based on the quality of bagel, but rather the amount of options available to bagel lovers in that town. The rankings signify the New Jersey towns that have the most bagel options in relation to the population. In LendEDU’s complete rankings, the towns that appear to have the same Bagel Density Index, but are ranked lower, are ranked lower because they actual did receive a lower Bagel Density Index when the numbers were not rounded up.
