While some individuals choose to believe in a religious god or gods, others choose to believe that there exists no higher being. The individuals who do not believe in life after death or do not believe in a heaven or hell are known as atheists. Atheism exists in many forms and in many different locations throughout the world.
There is a growing network of organizations too that support the mission of this group and will work to provide the resources necessary to promote the group’s message. One of the ways that atheist organizations promote this mission is through the use of scholarships. Atheist scholarships vary on who provides them and what application requirements involved. Below are a few of the atheist scholarships available for those who do not believe and are looking to pursue a college degree.
Freedom from Religion Foundation Scholarship
The Freedom from Religion Foundation is a group that has several different chapters throughout the country. As a group, it is their mission to promote the ideals of atheism through different efforts, displays, and publications.
From public demonstrations to scholarly articles, this is one of the largest atheist groups in the country. As part of their outreach and spreading of their message, the Freedom from Religion Foundation offers atheist scholarships to those atheist students looking to finance an education. Known as the Student Activist Awards, these atheist scholarships are for those that are promoting atheism in their own communities and school environments.
Given each year is one one-thousand dollar scholarship to a student that not only promotes the aforementioned, but also has excellent academic performance and a demonstrable financial need. Silverman Secular Humanist Scholarship
Atheism is not a singular foundation. In fact, there are many different sects of atheism including human secularism. Human secularism takes atheism to another level by promoting a natural philosophy and cosmic outlook on the world, politics, and human interaction. Among the different atheist scholarships available for those that want to pursue a college degree are those that are rooted in this humanistic secularism approach to life. Specifically, one of the largest and most valued of atheist scholarships available to individuals in this group is the Silverman Secular Humanist Scholarship.
The Silverman Secular Humanist Scholarship is available through the College of Charleston in South Carolina. All of those who apply must be actively studying at this college and must be a member in good standing academically. The award requires that individuals keep a 3.0 GPA and, if so, it is renewable each year. Those that wish to apply must have a demonstrated belief in human secularism and must continually represent this belief through their work in school and through the greater Charleston community.
Certain restrictions do apply when applying for this award and it is not available every year. Therefore, those that are interested in applying are encouraged to contact the schools Financial Aid Department, email the scholarship head at SilvermanScholarship@cofc.edu, or follow this link to the College of Charleston’s Financial Aid and Scholarship page.
