American Express, also known as Amex, is one of the largest credit card companies, offering a variety of different credit cards for you to choose from. One of their most popular rewards cards is their Amex Premier Rewards Gold Card. Let’s take a closer look and see what makes this card desirable.
Benefits & Rewards
First, let’s take a gander at the benefits and rewards offered by the Amex Premier Rewards Gold Card. Perhaps one of the biggest perks of this card is the rewards points that you can earn for making everyday purchases with your card. Earn one point for every dollar that you charge to the card, but enjoy 2 points per dollar when you use the card at gas stations, restaurants, and supermarkets in the U.S. You can even earn up to 3 points per dollar when you book your flights directly with a major airline company.
By using your card to make at least $2,000 in purchases within the first three months, they will reward you with 50,000 points! These points can be used for a variety of things including merchandise, gift cards, American Express travel purchases, entertainment, dining and much more. On top of that, American Express offers a $100 airline fee reimbursement to those traveling.
It also offers other excellent benefits that come standard with an Amex card, including an extended warranty protection, purchase protection, return protection, and dispute resolution services. Aside from these perks, they also have an extensive list of security benefits, including chip technology and a $0 fraud liability in the event that there are fraudulent charges made on your account. These are all great perks on top of the points that you can earn. They also offer convenient ways for you to manage your account, either through their mobile app or through online banking with their website. Set your account up for alerts as well so that you can always stay on top of your account.

Aside from looking into the benefits and rewards that come along with this card, we also need to look closely at any associated rates and fees. After all, it is important to know what you will have to pay as a cardholder. One of the first fees to consider is the annual membership fee. Amex will waive this fee for the first year, but after that, you will be billed $195 annually. On top of the annual membership fee, there are also penalty fees of up to $38 for every late payment or returned payment on your account. The good news is, however, there is no foreign transaction fee. This is great news for world travelers!
Since the Amex Premier Rewards Gold Card is a charge card, there are no annual percentage rates for carrying over a balance. You are expected to pay the balance in full each cycle, or else you will be required to pay a late payment fee. However, you can apply for special features, such as the Pay Over Time feature, which will allow you to make payments over time with added interest. This is something to check into when you apply for the card. If you don’t convert the account to Pay Over Time, you will be expected to make the Pay In Full amount on the bill each month.
The Bottom Line
When it boils down to it, the Amex Premier Rewards Gold Card is actually a pretty good charge card for businesses. The $195 annual fee does make some people a bit leery of it, but the benefits can outweigh the annual cost with regular business expenditures. The flexibility of choosing between the Pay In Full function and the Pay Over Time function actually offers freedom and flexibility. These are all things to consider when making your final decision. All in all, the benefits and rewards seem to outweigh that higher annual fee. It is also great for those that love to travel with no foreign transaction fees to worry about. These fees on other cards can really add up!
