There are so many reasons to love Amazon: the ability to receive just about anything in the mail within a couple days, Amazon Instant Video, and easy returns. Well, now Amazon has just given us another reason to love them. In addition to purchasing their textbooks from Amazon, students may now even be eligible to get some free tuition money from Amazon’s scholarship program.
Amazon’s new program is called the Amazon Student Scholarship. This new program will allow fifty undergraduate students to receive a hefty reduction, $5,000 to be exact, on their next tuition bill. In addition, an extra $500 will be given to the student for purchasing textbooks through Amazon. These are merit based scholarships, meaning that students will be evaluated based on their previous academic performance. In addition to their grade point average, students will also be selected based on their previous involvement within the community and demonstrated leadership experience. An additional requirement, an essay, will ensure that the finalists who are selected best meet the scholarships criteria. The final winners will be contacted by April and the scholarship will formally be awarded to winners in July.
While this move may seem to come from pure philanthropy, Amazon is also intending that these incredibly intelligent students become an ambassador to the Amazon brand. It is likely that part of the overarching goal is for the selected winners to help recruit new students to join Amazon Student Prime, which is lower priced version of Amazon Prime membership. The student version, which costs only about $50 per year, enables students to receive their textbooks and other school supplies with two day free shipping. Additionally, any other purchases they make are also eligible for the free two day shipping. In addition, students are offered other perks such as the ability to watch videos instantly, a Kindle lending library, and other promotions that benefit students.
In order to be eligible to apply for these new Amazon scholarships, students are required to be members of Amazon Student Prime. Any student who is enrolled in a two- or four-year university or college is eligible to apply. In addition, students must attend full-time. The application deadline is November 20th. The semifinalists will be contacted in January and they will be required to write an original essay in order to progress to the next round of the competition. Interested students may find additional information and the application form.
If you are not yet a member of Amazon Student Prime, Amazon does offer a free trial membership so that you can test out the benefits. In addition to earning $5,000 for tuition and $500 for books, students are likely to enjoy the additional perks afforded to them by their Amazon Prime memberships. The application process is a bit lengthy, so interested students may want to consider getting an early start. You may even be able to order some books from Amazon about scholarship applications to help you create a compelling application.
